How do regular people look when they do CrossFit?

My relationship with CrossFit started over three years ago. It started before Reebok entered into a sponsorship deal with CrossFit, made it a sport, and brought it to the out of the garage and onto ESPN. It started back when there were only a few boxes in Seattle and I had no idea how to describe it to people, other than to say, “It’s CrossFit.”

It started because like most great things, a friend told me about it.

Since then I climbed a 20-foot rope for the first time in my life. Did handstands across America and Canada. Learned I have amazing mobility and one amazing overhead squat. Met some of my closest friends and tightest community through my gym. Recruited at least a dozen people into CrossFit through real-life conversations and conversations on Twitter (seriously). Injured my right shoulder. Got depressed, angry, and really frustrated about it. Finally figured out a treatment plan that worked.

Want to know the best part?

My friend, Dillan Monson, shot a video that night at the gym during the WOD, and yours truly made her first CrossFit video appearance, banded pull-ups, cleans, and jerks included.

As another CrossFit friend put it, this is how ‘regular’ people look when they do CrossFit. By that, she means people like you and specifically me, not the elite-elite athletes.

Watch it, and let me know if you spot me 🙂

How to Save Yourself from the Zombie Apocalypse and Learn How to Shuffle

Around this time last year, I was obsessed with a little viral video that was recorded on iPhones on a subway in NYC. This year, I’m obsessed with a song that my cousin introduced me to over the summer by breaking out in a dance while I played the song via YouTube on my Grandma’s farm in nowhere Iowa.

Want to know the best part? I had no idea that this song and that dance was created to save the singers from the Zombie Apocalypse until this weekend. This song and that dance is definitely one that we should all learn, for our own safety and that of our loved ones.

So, because I love each and every one of you in a non-creepy, deeply platonic way, I’d like to bestow on you the gift of shufflin’ so you may survive the apocalypse as well.

Saturday Silliness

We take a break from our usual programming to share a bit of silliness courtesy of the Internet. This video was introduced to me by my partner in crime and is absolutely hilarious because I, too, have a box cat, and I miss the cuddly guy.

The Magic of Viral Videos

Music, songs, and live concerts have a way of entering your soul and leaving an impression on you. There are some bands and songs that I love but can’t listen to anymore because they bring me back to a time in my life that I can only take in small doses. I’m not saying those are good or bad times, just small doses.

I recently heard a song on the radio that reminded me of something but I couldn’t figure out what. The song was not the same as it was in my memory, whatever that memory was of. All of the words to the song were familiar and I couldn’t figure out why.

One day that song was playing in the car and John asked, “Have we seen these guys before?”

John and I don’t go to concerts a lot. If we do, it’s usually the same band and the guys serenading us on the radio were definitely not from that continent.

Who were these guys and where did we know this song from? (more…)
